REVIEW:

"There's very little music out there to compare 'Dark Reality: Freedom Fighter or Terrorist' to, as it carves out its own burrow in space-time.

I've never heard anything quite like it.

The term "sound art" seems to represent these tracks well.

This music is evolved far beyond the structure of most genres, although it does incorporate elements of grind (think early Godflesh), and power/noise/electronica. These flavors, however are put together in an evolving sound montage that is purely expressive and totally unique.

"Hold Me" fully embodies the dark introspection of this album. The driving fuzz-riffs and the swells of guitar feedback construct a portrait of one surveying an inner wreckage. Bursts of abstracted-death-metal chaos rage and round out the track as the mind seeks liberation.

"Native Spirit" is another stand-out, marrying elements of world music with intriguing forlorn vocals that permeate the entire release. The track seems to reflect a primal soul juxtaposed against a relentless modern world that grinds up anyone who moves too slowly or searches inward for answers.

"Baby I think I Love Ya" is a pleasantly surprising contrast to everything, very subdued and injected with a down-tempo, trip-hop vibe—like a stark blues ballad in the last days of the world.

"Love (For My Guru)" is a beautiful, ambient closing track with those awesome, distant vocals Dass does so well. The track evokes the sublimity of a vedic mantra and levitates the listener with passages of wind instrumentation. This piece sees warmth and love at the end of a turbulent and sometimes abyssal sonic journey.

There are some very, very mesmerizing moments on this release.

However, one has to approach this album with an open mind and open heart—this music is an entirely different species from the norm, and represents just another face of Dass's total identity as an artist, defying the common construct of what music is or could be."
